Seen this movie?
by bittersweet ini was just wondering if anyone here has ever seen the movie "the invention of lying".
if you haven't seen it it is basically about a guy who lives in a world where no one knows what a lie is.
when this mans mom is on her deathbed he tries to comfort her and makes up a story ( something no one else has the ability to do ) about a place like heaven where everyone will get to live in a mansion of their choosing.

Golly gosh, I watched this film today and was thinking what a prime metaphor it is for the way Dubs react.
The Q/A session when "the prophet" is making up the rules on the hoof is so like the slow motion car crash of GB explanations of issues that it makes you wince. The film should be required viewing.

these people, and their instutions were considered the gods' spokespeople.

As soon as men become a MS or an elder they have bought in and can no longer express any doubts felt. Then promotion through full time "service" means an increase in authority over those below and control by those above. Even at CO level every talk and meeting is closely controlled. Only the official line is allowed, the talks are uniform whoever the speaker is.
The higher you rise, the more careful your conformity to the party line has to be. Don't think though that these people though are unaware of the issues and arguments explored in sites like this. They are however intelligent people and must struggle with some of the issues as do others.
What then when they suddenly find a famous white WT envelope on the mat inviting them to become a GB member? Imagine the dilemma, those unanswered questions, the creaking of the structure. Now its your job to hold the whole thing together. You still can't express doubts, you have to bury them deeper than ever or it's hero to zero.
So do they really believe or are they the same as us all but with more to lose?

You beat me to the keyboard on this one. By extension the writings, musings, misleadings or fiction of the FDS have the same weight as the scriptures.
They look you right in the eye and challenge you to your face to call them liars. They call black white, yellow red and you swallow it or you are out. They make me despair.

this immediately starts to put the fossil record into a more sane place until you realise that adam ius still believed to be created in c4026 bce.. so we have fossil records going back almost unarguably into geological timescales, oil (from living things) miles below the surface of the earth.
coal (fossilised trees) also far below the surface of the earth but man 6000 years old aprox.. no wonder we aren't hearing much on the creative days.. s f.

I've read the books and seen the Swedish sub-titled 1st film. I loved them all. There is a strong political feminist theme, despite the graphic scenes I love the whole series. The author Stieg Larsson wrote this refreshingly different trilogy and then upped and died. Yes he's snuffed it. I mourn him. I think he is one off the most thought provoking authors of recent years, I am only sorry there will be no more. Roll on the ressurection. We could do with some good meaty sexually explicit entertainment in the new order.

More Society cutbacks - Society says "screw you" to the publishers yet again
by sir82 inat our service meeting it was announced that there is a change in the manner in which magazines are now to be delivered to the congregations.. up until now, magazines were sent to each kingdom hall via ups.
in years past magazines were sent to each congregation po's home address via ups.. going forward, magazines will be sent only as far as the assembly hall.
it is the responsibility of each kingdom hall to send brother(s) twice a month to drive out there, pick up the magazines, and return.. this of course saves a little bit of money for the society - shipping larger packages to fewer addresses will cost less.. however, what about the expense to the local congregations?.
